Happy New Year!

It's still PC to say that right?! I mean, I figure throughout Q1 we are good?! So on that note, let’s talk about my top 3 tips to getting organized in the new year. Inevitably, with each new year comes new goals, resolutions, and ideas. Almost always at the top of the list is the desire to "get organized". Whether it be a specific space in your home, or a complete overhaul of your life, getting organized just feels good, doesn't it?! That's why it's always one of the most sought after resolutions, time and again. Being & feeling organized catapults us into a space that screams: WE CAN DO ANYTHING!

And let me tell you, we can do anything

So sure, all of this sounds amazing doesn't it?! Can't you just see your life once it's organized and running smoothly?! I know I can. Big dreams are a necessity, and goals are a fantastic way to seeing those dreams become reality. But we have to set ourselves up for success at step 1. And we have to be honest with ourselves, truly honest. If you can't do that, then bring in a friend to help you see the light, or simply hire a professional {ahem, such as myself}.

Where Do I Start?

Making the decision to change the way things are takes courage, so never forget that. You are a strong person for realizing that your current way of doing things needs to change. But if we look at the whole picture, it can sometimes lead us into a dark hole where we become frozen and incapable of taking even 1 tiny step towards our goal. Conversely, if we add too many steps and make our scope too broad, we will inevitable get overwhelmed. Let's make sure that doesn't happen.

This is where you take a deep breath, and start with 1 thing. Not 1 place, but 1 thing. There is a difference. For instance take shoes. If you want to tackle your shoe collection, yet you keep shoes in various places of your house, you will never get fully organized. You must find all of your shoes living in every nook and cranny of your house and pile them all together. This is where you start. This is the crucial step 1 and a recipe for success! So, let's start with taking those crucial first steps to make that happen.

Here are my top 3 tips to getting your space organized in the new year.

Empty the Space

  • Group like-items from every corner of your house

  • Tackle 1 category at a time (ie: shoes, books, spatulas)

  • Create 5 piles: KEEP, TOSS, DONATE, SELL, REPURPOSE

Prioritize

  • When was the last time you TOUCHED it, USED it, LIKED it

  • Does it spark JOY? {Answer this in 5 seconds or less, thank you Marie Kondo}

  • How many do you have? {Nobody needs a dozen spatulas}

Purge & Sort

  • Use cardboard boxes & black bags while sorting. {This hides the items once placed inside}

  • Categorize: Is this tied to a memory or is it a necessity

  • Display or contain {depending on item} and properly label, ensuring success in your new space

Did you know that the average American wastes 55 minutes a day {thats roughly 12 days a year}, looking for things they own but cannot find?! This is astonishing. Think of what you could be doing with that time- enjoying your families, spending time with friends, helping others, giving yourself some TLC.....the list goes on! The hardest part is simply starting. So do it today. Don't worry about how much you have to tackle. Instead, take it one day at a time and finish each category completely before moving on to the next one. Listen, I know this can be daunting, truly I do. I have done this myself and helped countless others achieve the same success. I promise that my Top 3 Tips to getting your space organized will help you to breathe easier.
